Contact: Eric Miller (202) 347-1122 or defense@pogo.org POGO has just learned that Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner and Ranking Member Carl Levin are attempting to reach a compromise that would begin to address some of the egregious problems with the Boeing tanker leasing deal. The compromise would scale back the number of aircraft to be leased from 100 to 25. But only after the following are completed: an analysis of alternatives to the leasing deal including consideration of other types of planes, a corrosion study of the current tanker fleet, and a GAO study of pricing data produced by the Institute for Defense Analysis. POGO believes this proposal is a strong step in the right direction. "Today's decision shows that public outrage can overcome sleazy deals made behind closed doors. This is a victory for the taxpayers in a long and hard fought fight. Senators McCain, Warner, and Levin should be congratulated for their leadership in making our government accountable to the public rather than private interests like Boeing," said Eric Miller, POGO's Senior Defense Investigator. POGO investigates, exposes, and seeks to remedy systemic abuses of power, mismanagement, and subservience by the federal government to powerful special interests. Founded in 1981, POGO is a politically-independent, nonprofit watchdog that strives to promote a government that is accountable to the citizenry. # # #
