 For Immediate ReleaseContact: Beth Daley beth@pogo.org (202) 347-1122 Today the Department of Energy announced that it would take competitive bids on the contract to manage Los Alamos National Laboratory (Click here to view the AP story). The announcement follows repeated revelations by whistleblowers about mismanagement of the Lab. Since the release of its report, "U.S Nuclear Weapons Complex: Security at Risk" on lax security, POGO has served as a conduit between Los Alamos insiders and the media, leaking documents and information concerning mismanagement of the Lab. POGO also helped to expose the plight of two investigators who were fired by the Lab after exposing fraud and national security breaches, and a whistleblower exposing safety violations including exposure of workers to plutonium. Danielle Brian, Executive Director of the Project On Government Oversight issued the following statement: "Today, we need to thank the whistleblowers at Los Alamos who courageously stepped forward to expose corruption, national security breaches, safety violations, and fraud. Their example sends a clear signal: institutions that retaliate against whistleblowers risk being toppled by the truth." The announcement that the contract to run Los Alamos is up for the best bidder is great news for the country, as well as for the lab itself. No matter who wins the competition, no longer will there be a "contract for life" mentality. Accountability will be injected in the process for the first time in Los Alamos' 60 year history.
