The Project on Government Oversight's (POGO) fellowship program should appeal to people looking for a chance to:
- Gain experience working with the Executive branch, Congress, the media and other nonprofit organizations.
- Observe how Washington works.
- Work to protect the public interest. Learn how to use the tools available for citizens to research the government and corporations.
Currently there are no Fellowship positions available until Summer 2009
POGO's fellowships work as follows
The main job of our fellows is to investigate government subservience to special interests. The fellows research often requires them to file Freedom of Information Act requests as well as go to congressional hearings, the Library of Congress and different government agencies. On occasion, fellows work with whistleblowers. Sometimes the fellow's research culminates in a POGO report. Of course, some of an fellow's time, less than 15% usually, is spent doing clerical work --- from copying and answering the phone to filing. This work is shared by all the staff.
Recent Fellowship Projects
Fellows have recently worked on projects such as advocating whistleblower protections, increasing oversight at EPA Superfund sites, exposing corporate fraud, and fighting to reform the Federal Election Commission. Qualifications
POGO is not looking for a fellow to have a specific major, but someone who is motivated to expose corruption and explore solutions. Graduate and law students have been utilized.
Compensation
POGO fellows are offered a stipend which includes benefits. Fellows usually work thirty-five hours a week. POGO is looking for a 1 year commitment from the fellow. POGO has no application deadline, but due to the number of applicants it is advised to contact us as soon as possible.
The office is also conveniently located right at Metro Center on the red, blue and orange lines.

POGO prefers that anyone applying for a Fellowship send a cover letter and include their resume, transcript (a copy is fine), a writing sample, and two (2) letters of recommendation.
