FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 19, 2001
Contact: Beth Daley (202) 347-1122 Pentagon Tester Philip E. Coyle, III to Receive POGO's "Beyond the Headlines Award" Washington, DC - Philip E. Coyle, III will receive the Project On Government Oversight's (POGO) "Beyond the Headlines Award," its annual award to an individual who has tenaciously pursued efforts to create a more accountable and responsive federal government. Mr. Coyle recently stepped down as the Pentagon's Director of Operational Test and Evaluation and Assistant Secretary of Defense, where he was responsible for overseeing the testing of over 200 major weapons systems. He was often the only independent voice of reason at the Pentagon on the capabilities and shortcomings of weapons. He publicly warned of the inadequacies of the V-22 Osprey before the recent fatal crash, and has tirelessly cautioned that the National Missile Defense program is not being realistically tested. Mr. Coyle will also speak at a panel discussion being organized by POGO the morning following the award ceremony. The topic of the panel is Are We Buying the Right Weapons in the Best Way? The Pentagon's Weapons Buying Systems: Lessons Learned." Prior "Beyond the Headlines Award" recipients include: Senator Charles Grassley, who has been tireless fraud-fighter and champion of whistleblowers; Robert Martin, EPA National Ombudsman, for helping communities resolving conflicts with government and industry at Superfund sites; Bill Hedden of the Grand Canyon Trust, for his leadership in forcing the federal government to protect tens of millions of Americans from the harmful effects of the Moab uranium tailings pile on the Colorado River. The award ceremony will take place on Monday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mott House, 122 Maryland Avenue, NE in Washington, DC. The panel discussion will take place on Tuesday, April 3 at 9:00 a.m. in Room 562, Dirksen Senate Office Building. To RSVP, call POGO at 202-347-1122 or email danni@pogo.org For more information about the Beyond the Headlines Award, click here. POGO investigates, exposes, and seeks to remedy systemic abuses of power, mismanagement, and subservience by the federal government to powerful special interests. Founded in 1981, POGO is a politically-independent, nonprofit watchdog that strives to promote a government that is accountable to the citizenry.
